Putin ‘s world just dramatically decreased in size now that he has an arrest warrant out from the ICC

Now that Vladamir Putin has an arrest warrant out in his name from the ICC there’s a good chance that if he leaves Russia he may be arrested. As reported by this newspaper earlier this weekend, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Vladamir Putin.

At the time it was unclear how such would be enforced because like with many things Russia appears to think it is above international law and does not actually honour anything that comes from the ICC.

But the same is not the case for many other countries. The way the warrant is set to work is that if Putin actually travels to a country in which may honour an ICC warrant then it would become a much different story. According to this website, there are about 132 countries in which honour anything that comes from the ICC but the waters get murky from that point on.

What is the ICC?

The International Criminal Court was created about 20 years ago in an effort to investigate war crimes; genocide, and other crimes against humanity or humanity or large. While it has no police force of its own, warrants and other motions that arise from the court are often left up to governments to determine how to apply them. For instance, if Putin were to be arrested in a country that acknowledges the ICC he would then be flown to the Hague to face trial for his horrific crimes.
