Despite several calls from attorneys; activists, and others — top judges in NYC ‘s Housing Court have confirmed to multiple outlets that they will not extend the 1 Oct eviction deadline that looms for millions. According to this Brooklyn magazine, the decision will now be left up to legislators and the Governor once the ban actually expires. If New York ‘s legislators can’t come to an agreement by Oct 1, hell will rise for millions of New Yorkers who are struggling to pay their rent.
The Brooklyn Reporter notes that the decision comes amid a mass exodus from New York City against the backdrop of a severe rise in violence; crippling job markets, and the failure of many officials to actually correctly manage the Coronavirus pandemic.
