Russia ‘s new offense is going much slower than they had hoped: Defence Officials

Russian officials are still struggling; Vladamir Putin is still an asshole, and the sky is still blue. Welcome to Sunday ‘s edition of The Dictators Guide to Russia.

Russia ‘s renewed offensive against Ukraine as it seeks to tighten its grip in eastern Ukraine isn’t quite going according to plan. According to the Huffington Post, defence officials have revealed that high-level intelligence has revealed that like before Russian troops are struggling to defeat Ukraine ‘s people. So far like before Ukrainian volunteers and the armed forces have despite their own losses managed to fend off Putin where possible.

Meanwhile over in Mariupol officials and citizens are hoping an attempt by the United Nations comes through. The AP report notes that officials are attempting to actively broker an escape hatch for those still trapped in the steel plant in the area. Russia pretty much has the plant surrounded and has for some time.

In other parts, the mayor of Popasna in eastern Ukraine, Nikolai Khanatov also according to the AP has revealed that contact with two evacuation buses has been lost after they were attacked by Russian forces. It is unclear the current status of the evacuation buses.

Mostly, the new offensive appears to be focused on the eastern industrial region of Donbas.

So what is so special about Donbas? Why does Putin want the area so bad?

In the 19th century, the area was a heavily resource rich area. The area is known for its presence of numerous types of minerals and other vital resources. It’s safe to say that Putin probably wants the area for this reason among others.

The area is widely known for the presence of hard coal (particularly anthracites), rock salt, lignite, marl, limestone, clays and other building materials, mercury, and various ores.
