These apps and tips can help you stay safe in big cities like New York City amid soaring crime

Okay so look guys and gals and people out there. Crime is pretty bad in New York City these days and I wanted to share some helpful safety tips that I swear by that have helped me stay safe all these years in the Big Apple. First and foremost, pepper spray and a taser are pretty normal in New York City and are generally the two most essential items I have in my crossbody.

I almost never leave my flat without them. But let’s get to some tips and apps you can use to properly help protect yourself and ding police and help in the event of a major emergency. Following the grisly murder of Christina Yuna Lee it felt appropriate to share these tips and tricks navigating crime in 2022.

  1. Noonlight

This one is absolutely a no brainer. Noon is an app I like to call a “kill switch” that triggers emergency services to your location at the press of a button. It also requires that a pin actually be entered for the trigger alarm to deactivate itself. Users must fill out your profile along with a photograph so that the app knows who you are in the event they have to trigger police to your location. It is the foremost app I have on my phone at all times on my first home screen.

DISCLOSURE: I do not recall ever having paid a fee for Noonlight.

2. Citizen Protect

This app is controversial in itself, however, its protect feature is everything one would need to help in the event of an emergency. A while back I was followed by someone who I presume had I not gotten away would’ve probably attacked and mugged me. Using Citizen Protect a “protection agent” connected with me via video chat until I reached the train station to ensure that there was an active witness had any actual crime occurred. In the event a crime does occur, you obviously have a witness and someone who knows exactly where you are and can easily inform police of such. I like this app because it is very personal and it is almost like your own personal 911 service.

DISCLOSURE: This app does have a cost. $19.99/month but it is entirely worth it.

3. Where to buy pepper spray/tasers in New York City

Generally speaking you can almost always find these items along 125th in Harlem or near Jay Street in Brooklyn. I paid roughly $10 for my spray and $15 for my rechargeable (it charges like a wall plug for a phone in the wall) taser.
