Reports of a coup have surfaced in Sudan, here’s everything you need to know right now

According to multiple published reports out this morning, a military led coup appears to be underway in the country of Sudan. The reported coupe comes just a month before the military was set to hand control to civilians next month after several months of a joint military-civilian situation leading the government.

But that doesn’t appear to be the case anymore. Reports indicate that the acting Prime Minister among at least 5 other government officials were all abruptly detained over the weekend as pressures and tensions have mounted for some time in the country. Like most protests in other countries, Sudanese are ultimately fighting for better freedoms and quality of life in the country — some of which has long been poor even before and after the ousting of Omar the country’s former autocratic leader.

Most of the protests and tension is occurring in the city of Khartoum and surrounding areas according to social media posts from citizens in the country.

Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan maintains that nothing will differ and that civilian elections will take place in July 2023. Civilians however do not believe that after more than a year of troubling times in the Sudanese country.
