Similar to the events that have occurred since the early days of the pandemic, South Africa, is now at the helm of one of the world’s worst active outbreaks of the deadly disease. Initially, South Africa had hoped by the graces granted to them that the country would not have to experience another wave — but the Delta Variant as mysterious as it remains sits still largely not entirely understood.
The Daily News spoke to at least 3 different healthcare works spanning Johannesburg and nearby hospitals who all had one general consensus for the outbreak.
Said outbreak had and has spun out of control. Bodies lined up in hospitals; bouts for beds, some patients even dying while on oxygen waiting for a bed to open up in overly crammed hospitals. Hospitals that for months have been struggling at near or well beyond maximum capacity.
Infections in the area known no bounds and are still currently rising. At least one city official, particularly the Mayor, has also succumbed to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It is my sad duty to confirm that the Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Geoffrey Makhubo has indeed succumbed to Covid-19,” said acting Executive Mayor and Member of the Mayoral Committee Eunice Mgcina via the official Twitter account of the city’s authorities.
Hospital officials are raising the alarm(s) this time around about the fact that area hospitals are struggling to maintain access to adequate oxygen.
