NYC ‘s MTA plans major service cuts BUT will raise fares to $3.75: Report

In the age of a pandamike (that’s millenial slang for pandemic guys) the MTA is struggling hard but then again it was already deeply struggling before. Whilst the subway had always seemed like a right of passage for many, er, in recent years it has become a shelter for those who need it among other things.

Those things coupled the MTA has seen such drastic drops in ridership a new austerity report paints just how grim the future is for the troubled metro goliath. According to that report (first published by the NYDN), the MTA plans to do the following:

  1. Potentially cut weekend service all together.
  2. Hike fares by 36% to nearly $3.75
  3. Chop current service reducing employees by the thousands.
  4. Bus routes would also be slashed by nearly half.
  5. Some city bus routes would see their end entirely.

These reductions would pretty much spell the end of the MTA as we know it or close too it. Service reductions to this extent would almost inevitably push people to use transportation services like Uber or Lyft more or simply buy their own vehicle. Many New Yorkers have long avoided owning a car because for many it just isn’t logical in New York City, however, it is becoming more clear given the pandemic and current circumstances that might soon change.
