Earth has 8 continents

Editors Note: We’re starting something new here at The Daily News. Every day we will be sharing weird facts; fun facts, and odd things we think people might find interesting. Some of these things some of you probably have never heard of — which makes this all the more fun. This series will focus on both past and present things.

In this article, we explore the world in which we live and the environment that comes with it. According to this previously written article, the earth or “planet” in which we live on actually has about 8 known continents. Scientists actually argued at the time of the publication of this article that the continent should be included on map’s we see everyday (hint: it isn’t.)

Based on geological definitions of a continent, the Earth actually has a lost eighth continent, known as Zealandia. Most of this continent is submerged beneath the sea, while a tiny sliver, including New Zealand, is above the water.

What’s the continent’s name?

According to researchers in the article, there is an 8th continent off the coast of New Zealand. That continent is actually reportedly called Zealandia. The continent is partially considered lost because it is submerged underwater, but in recent years has sparked the interest of researchers and the like arguing for its acknowledgement.

Researchers interviewed by Live Science at the time confirmed that the existence of the continent can partially be seen by simply peering off the coast of New Zealand. Interestingly, the continent has a huge range of altitude.

Researchers estimate that the continent was created and then broken up about 85m years ago and once was part of the supercontinent called Gondwana.
