The official death toll from COVID-19 in NYC has soared

Mostly because the city is now counting confirmed *and* probable COVID-19 deaths. Weeks after it emerged that there were probably far more deaths from the Coronavirus in NYC than believed (because people were dying alone in their homes) the city has now reversed course on its official count.

According to the city, they’ve now found 3,378 additional “probable” COVID-19 death ‘s that they were certain enough to include on death certificates. That is not including the 6,589 absolutely confirmed by to be from COVID-19 all together.

“Behind every death is a friend, a family member, a loved one. We are focused on ensuring that every New Yorker who died because of COVID-19 gets counted,” said Health Commissioner Dr. Oxiris Barbot.
