Las Vegas just criminalized homelessness, here’s why that’s a huge problem

As homelessness in America reaches unbelievable heights, cities are attempting their own efforts to curb extraordinary numbers that have reached crisis levels.  According to officials in Las Vegas, it is now a crime to be caught sleeping on the streets of Las Vegas.

No joke. Officials are hoping that this curbs the city ‘s extraordinary homeless problem all the while cleaning up Las Vegas and its streets.

The Daily News learned Friday that Vegas officials and police intend to enforce the law in the downtown area but reportedly not on the strip itself. Interestingly, a similar law in Idaho last year was struck down by several judges after it was publicly declared unconstitutional.

Often many street homeless people are faced with the idea that there just aren’t enough shelter beds for everybody — therefore leaving no other option other than public places.

Opposition to the law has been strong. Alike other cities, Las Vegas is abnormally expensive in terms of rent and many have lost their jobs due to being unable to afford the high rents. Couple that with the lack of supportive mental health services — it is a public nightmare for some to live in Las Vegas.

Homelessness is already hard enough to deal with.. but…. in the downtown area as of Saturday….

It is now a crime to be caught camping, lodging, sitting, lying down, sleeping and similar activities’ in most downtown areas.  Warnings will be provided, and then, fines of up to $1,000 will be handed out and sometimes even up to 6 months in jail.
