Former Peruvian President Alan Garcia, wanted for corruption, dead by suicide

LIMA — He’s at the epicenter of one of the country’s most prolific scandals ever — but for Alan Garcia the prospect of going to prison for the rest of his life was way too much. According to Garcia’s lawyer and translated local media, the former president is in critical condition following a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

UPDATE: Authorities in Peru have confirmed that hours after this report was published, former Prez Alan Garcia has died. An autopsy is expected although we’re certain the shot in the head was fatal. He was due to be arrested for treason and corruption.

He reportedly locked himself in his palatial bedroom before opening fire on himself moments before police arrived.

Reports in Peru say that he has suffered 3 cardiac arrests and his condition remains overall in life threatening condition. Peruvian authorities were closing in on his arrest following determination that he accepted illegal bribes during his second term as President.

García alike the past three presidents in Peru have all either been under investigation for corruption, or, simply been flat out arrested for it.
