In a weird turn of events, the U.S government now claims it owns certain patents for PrEP

In a stunning turn of events in the fight against AIDS and the delivering of PrEP to the masses — the United States government has found to be fighting the makers of PREP for access to some of their earnings.

That argument went widely unreported by gay blogs and news sites across the United States so we’re running news of it here even though it was originally reported last month. According to this report, the U.S administration claims that part of the research information used in monkey studies related to PrEP actually is owned by the CDC.

But according to a lawsuit filed and a response from Gilead Science that isn’t the case and that such claims on said patents for that information weren’t properly given to Gilead before they apparently pursued their own patents on all parts of the situation here.

The government report claims that Gilead Sciences profited off of the drug itself at the behest partially of the research information involved. PrEP in itself is a highly effective drug meant to prevent HIV in HIV negative people. It, however, is insanely expensive running more than $1,785 a month without insurance in certain places.

According to Healio, the central point of the government-led lawsuit is allegedly to “provide affordable further access to everybody and to stop the gauging of the price of PrEP”
