Argentina’s VP Cristina Fernandez guilty in fraud case: Reports

Argentinian Vice President Cristina Fernandez has been found guilty in what was the long-running fraud case stemming from her first stint as President of the country. According to reports, Fernandez is facing up to six years in prison but is expected to appeal which is expected to take years to complete. She will remain free during the appeal according to reports in the country. It is expected that she will be barred from public office indefinitely.

Argentina’s fiercest leader for the first part of this century, she was accused of improperly granting dozens of public works contracts to a construction tycoon closely tied to her family. She has viciously denied all allegations.

Prosecutors have long said Fernández fraudulently directed 51 public works projects in total to Lázaro Báez, a construction tycoon and early ally of her and her husband Nestor Kirchner, who served as president in 2003-2007 and died suddenly in 2010. His death has always been considered under odd circumstances.
