Norway has euthanized its famed walrus Freya because folks can’t seem to follow simple instructions

Freya the famed Walrus over in Norway is now in a better place. According to Norwegian authorities, Freya was euthanized this weekend after repeated warnings to the public to stay away from her ultimately failed.

“The decision to euthanize the walrus was made based on an overall assessment of the continued threat to human safety,” said Frank Bakke-Jensen, the director general at the Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries, in a news release.

The decision to euthanize comes from the fact that Freya was unusually friendly towards humans and officials weren’t sure why. People wouldn’t stay away from her and unfortunately the government decided to euthanize her before something actually happened.

“We have sympathies for the fact that the decision can cause reactions with the public, but I am firm that this was the right call,” Bakke-Jensen continued. “We have great regard for animal welfare, but human life and safety must take precedence.”
