He Jainkui perhaps the world’s most notorious scientist is out of prison. According to media reports published on Wednesday, the controversial scientist who helped engineer the first known gene-edited babies was freed sometime between Saturday night and now from Chinese prison. Jainkui had previously been convicted on alleged trumped up charges of “illegally” practicing medicine in China.
MIT Technology Review was the first to report his being freed though Chinese officials and He Jainkui aren’t speaking to the public at this time.
