The tall tales of Sherri Papini

The wild tale of Sherri Papini is certainly one that will go down in the internet hall of fame as one of the weirdest hoaxes of all time. Back in 2016, Papini first appeared in headlines around the world amid claims that at the time she had disappeared under murky circumstances and nobody was quite sure what had happened.

Keith Papini allegedly took out a check from a GoFundMe account intended to help find his wife Sherri.

Except she wasn’t actually missing but according to federal prosecutors in 2019 staged the entire thing in an effort to pay off her mounting credit card debt. Prosecutors allege that her partner Keith Papini may have been in on the rouse the entire time even having made a former flame of hers apparently aware at least of what was going on. Back when Papini was reportedly found on the side of a street on Thanksgiving day 2016 — most of the wounds she had including the wood burn on her foot were self-inflicted.

Papini and her husband allegedly used more than $49,000 of their GoFundMe donations on credit card debt and personal expenses.

She is according to court records due back in court on Tuesday and remains imprisoned while the case is playing out. Prosecutors maintain that Papini had been alive the entire time and had orchestrated the rouse using sites like GoFundMe to scam people out of their money.
