New York ‘s eviction protections have expired, here’s what that means for the everyday New Yorker

Last updated on 2022-01-16

On Saturday New York State ‘s moratorium on evictions officially expired which means come Tuesday hell will raise for New Yorkers who are behind on their rent. According to what we’ve managed to confirm, housing court in the city alone has more than 200k people backlogged for eviction with most of those cases expected to begin on Tuesday. Thousands of New Yorkers and their families are now set to face the wrath of their landlord in a matter of hours.

From an activism standpoint, supporters of the moratorium are demanding an extension of the programme into June. Though another extension seems highly unlikely in an already contested rental market with landlords eager to get money into their hands. As it stands it appears Hochul has declined to extend the moratorium again.

Renters must now apply for protections on their own to be protected from eviction. Please follow this link for more information on how to do so and as we understand if you have proof you’ve done so you should be able to ward off eviction at least for now.
