Here’s everything you need to know about the omicron variant in a single article right now

This article is part of our free series on the Coronavirus pandemic. As we wade further through the pandemic, it’s important that we keep our readers updated day-by-day as the course of the pandemic changes. In this guide — we’re going to explore everything we know so far about the newly detected variant. This article guide will be on the front page every morning and will be updated as we continue to learn more information about this variant.

  1. The new variant has about 30 mutations in total which is about double compared to the last.

According to reports, the Delta variant had roughly half of the mutations this variant does. That has increased the chances that this variant is far more transmissible than the last. This is the single most reason that officials; experts, and the like are all further pushing masks and vaccinations.

2. According to the World Health Organisation it is unclear if this variant makes you sicker than the last

That is because there have been only a handful of cases detected so far. But as holiday travel among other things continues to take place around the world. This is important because as more info becomes available we probably will learn that it in fact does.

3. Current vaccines probably will continue to work against the variant according to numerous experts

Experts say that the current set of vaccines likely will continue to work unless the variant does end up coming to prove that it is evading vaccines in some way. At this time, it is understood that such has not yet happened and this area should not be a concern just yet.

The variant called B.1.1.529 was first detected in Africa on 24 November although appears to now have been in Europe days prior to that per reports out of what appears to be Belgium. The World Health Organisation now reports that t he variant has been found in at least 23 countries and counting.

“It is not yet clear whether Omicron is more transmissible” or if it causes more severe disease, the World Health Organization said on Sunday.

As of today, it appears that the omicron variant has been found again in America. According to officials, a person who visited NYC and went to what is known as Anime NYC (a highly attended anime event) has tested positive for the new variant. The attendance was recorded last month and indicates that the variant probably is already floating around New York as more than 50,000 people attended the annual event.
