A Grammy winning singer is headed to federal prison, here’s why

As it turns out fraud these days is apparently the hot-thing-to-do even though it carries the almost inevitable prison sentence. According to BET.com, Grammy winning singer Irvin Mayfield and atl east one of his associates is preparing to spend the next 18 months behinds bars. Mayfield and his associate reportedly defrauded a New Orlenas Public Library (an odd place to defraud in the first place) to the tune of more than $1.23m.

Prosecutors alleged in their arguments that between 2011 and 2013 Mayfield and his associates using their powerful positions within the city funnelled more than $1.23m of public/city funds meant for libraries to themselves. They further allege that those funds went directly to projects and other things meant to enrich the two rather than libaries. The judge presiding over the case also sentenced them to 18 months; plus restitution, plus 500 hours of teaching music lessons to kids given their extraordinary achievements in music.

Both will report to prison by 5 January 2022.
