The fascinating fall of Alex Murdaugh and the allegations of embezzlement

Alex Murdaugh the former lawyer who was once a part of a renowned legal dynasty has fallen. In fact, Murdaugh has fallen so dramatically it’s almost inevitable that a movie will be made in the coming years.

But the new revelations against the former lawyer make his fall even more extraordinary. According to new lawsuit documents, Murdaugh is being sued by his former firm and many colleagues against allegations that his embezzlement goes back further than last known.

In the documents, it is alleged that Murdaugh began using fake bank accounts to hide away money that he stole from his firm and clients years ago. Those funds are understood to have supported his and his family’s lavish lifestyle but also his troubling drug addiction that he hid from those around him.

One section of the legal complaint reads ‘PMPED has determined that Alex Murdaugh was able to covertly steal these funds by disguising disbursements from settlements as payments to an annuity company, trust account or structured settlement for clients or as structured attorney’s fees that he had earned when in fact they were deposited into the fictious account at Bank of America.’

Last month the firm addressed the scandal on its website in a statement for the first time.

PMPED is a robust firm with skilled, experienced attorneys who represent our clients with a fierce commitment to obtaining justice. We were shocked and dismayed to learn that Alex violated our principles and code of ethics.’

It continues, ‘He lied and he stole from us. No member of PMPED was aware of Alex’s scheme. When we learned he betrayed our trust, we requested his resignation immediately. We have yet to speak to anyone who was aware of his addiction to opioids.’
