In California politics quite literally anything is actually possible. The leading GOP candidate hoping to replace Gavin Newsom is making headlines around the world this week after he made some fairly shocking claims about slavery reparations.
Before we go any further yes that GOPer is Larry Elder and yes Elder is a Black man who contrary to what he probably believes also came from the enslaved himself.
When people talk about reparations, do they really want to have that conversation? Like it or not, slavery was legal,’ Elder said.
‘Their legal property was taken away from them after the Civil War, so you could make an argument that the people that are owed reparations are not only just Black people but also the people whose ‘property’ was taken away after the end of the Civil War.’
The shocking comments were made on none other than The Candace Owens show. — a show equally known for outlandish claims about Black people and the Black community as a whole.
Against the backdrop of intense criticism on social media, Elder, defended his comments even further by claiming that allot of the problem with reparations is not slaves in itself but the fact that “legal” property was lost. For those who may be too young, Elder is referring to the 13th amendment which made it illegal to own a slave in the continental United States.
Interestingly in the same interview, Elder cited an 1837 decision by the British government that slave owners be compensated for their own loss of revenue after the UK said no to slavery. According to historical records, the UK in fact compensated white people to the tune of nearly 20m because they lost their slaves.
