WH says it firmly backs Cubans protesting in rare sign of dissent in hermit country

Against the backdrop of raging protests in Cuba; reported food shortages, trouble with vaccine rollouts, and general distaste for Cuban government officials — locals in the country are fighting back against a government they say has failed them. The United States has made it clear, though not fast enough, that American stands with the Cuban people as very rare signs of dissent continue to emerge in the country.

“We stand with the Cuban people and their clarion call for freedom and relief from the tragic grip of the pandemic and from the decades of repression and economic suffering to which they have been subjected by Cuba’s authoritarian regime,” Biden said in a statement Monday morning. Much of the protests surrounding the idea that the quality of life; healthcare access, and access to food have all long been problems in the communist led country.
