#DeleteFacebook campaign grows as social network blocks news in AU and more

Against the backdrop of a campaign requiring sites like Facebook to pay news organisations for the content in which it links against — Facebook has pulled the plug entirely. On Thursday, news organisations and the ability to share and even open the news from Facebook went dark following reports that the network refuses to adhere to a law requiring that news orgs be compensated for their news.

Except the problem during the initial news ban was that Facebook somehow managed to block almost everybody from the network entirely. Those included were health authorities; health departments, members of government and more. As one would expect Facebook quickly caught the ire of parliament and beyond.

As a result of Facebook ‘s shocking efforts, a campaign encouraging people to delete the network all together has sprung up.

“We’re in the middle of a pandemic,” tweeted lawmaker Mark Butler. “Australians need to hear from credible voices in the vaccine rollout. This is completely irresponsible from Facebook.”
