Jeff Bezos’ wealth has increased so much over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, that it might just be the time that he is forced to pay more taxes and do better for the world. In a stunning letter signed by 40 signatories from around the world, Presidents; Prime Ministers, and the like are now calling for Bezos to step up to the plate.
Since the onset of the pandemic, Bezos’ wealth has often grown at 5-11 times higher than just before the pandemic. A large part of that reason is because Bezos’ owns Amazon.com and its many subsidaries — a place where many people (including us for example) have turned to shop for essentials during lockdown.
The letter notes that Amazon ‘s employees at this point are critical parts of the frontline agains the pandemic. Often entering unsafe work conditions; packaging stuff up, delivering things to people’s houses, and more are all reasons they deserve better at the hands of their boss.
Meanwhile in a statement to the Independent, Amazon had this to indirectly say as a response to the inquiries.
“While as a large company we welcome scrutiny from policymakers, the matters raised in this letter stem from a series of misleading assertions by misinformed or self-interested groups who appear to be using Amazon’s profile to further their individual causes.”
