The alluring mystery of Tristan Da Cunha

In this series of articles — we’re exploring parts of the world that most people probably have never heard of. These parts include parts where humans aren’t allowed; islands that are indefinitely off limits to the rest of us, and other interesting places we find digging through historical records and geographical maps.

In our first entry, we bring you the fairly mysterious island of Tristan da Cunha. Tristan da Cunha is a British overseas territory that has blocked any human from ever apparently relocating to or moving to its island ever again. As of the census about five years ago, the population stands at about 250 people and is not permitted to allow any one else to inhabit the island. All of the resident do hold British overseas citizenship — although the island is otherwise sort of a mystery.

In 2018 — Tristan da Cunha was named one of the most if not the most remote inhabited territory in the world. While it may seem obvious — the entire reason on the population block is both puzzling as it is alluring.

The island is located about 1,511 miles off the coast of Cape Town South Africa.

Fun fact: The only way into this island is by boat or expedition which takes approximately 6 days and starts in South Africa. There is no airstrip and it is virtually impossible to fly into Tristan da Cunha.

Up next in this series: We’re chronicling 3 places on planet earth that by means are human allowed to go too.
