Pharma giant Purdue Pharma is no more. According to a judgement, the Pharma company (who makes Oxycontin here guys) has agreed to a number of requirements that will actually see its end. Per the ruling, the drug mule has agreed to dissolve itself; plead guilty to three federal crimes for its part in the crisis, and will pony up billions in fines.
Documents show that Purdue admitted to DOJ investigators and the DEA that they don’t have the apparent cash on hand to pay the fines in full as of this time — which is why the company is being dissolved and turn into a public trust that will benefit the American public. This essentially is one of the first big times a drug maker has been shut down for its role in the deadly crisis that has rocked American households for decades.
Earnings of the future public-trust company will go towards partially paying its fines and then going towards rehab programs and other things that will directly benefits the American public. The new company, however, will in fact still sell Oxycontin but it will instead be sold with a life-saving overdose medicine at steeply discounted prices.
This agreement has not upended the very likely possibility that the Sackler ‘s will go to prison for their role in the crisis. Per the same agreement by the DOJ, the door has not fully been closed on charges being filed against the drug lords.
