Richmond poised to remove remaining Confederate statues as racial reckoning continues

As the long-time-coming racial reckoning continues in America, Virginia has joined the number of states planning to or have already flat out taken down their Confederate statues. On Wednesday, Democratic mayor Levar Stoney of Richmond announced through the use of his lawful emergency powers — that multiple Confederate statues throughout Richmond would be coming down.

As of Wednesday afternoon, it appears that cleaning crews have already been spotted doing so.

“It is past time,” Levar said in an address on Wednesday. “As the capital city of Virginia, we have needed to turn this page for decades. And today, we will.”

Of the statues coming down, they also include one statue of Gen. Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson — one of many Confederate figures that fought to stop America from becoming what it is today.
