It’s a law “meant” to prevent people from sleeping in places that aren’t intended to see people sleep, however, it is instead being widely panned as a law meant to criticize and criminalize the poor.
On Tuesday, Las Vegas’s controversial new piece of legislation finally became public law. That legislation now makes it illegal for homeless people to sleep in public venues, and if they’re caught they will face upwards of $1k in fines very likely jail time.
Backers of the law claim that it will encourage people to actually go to a shelter permitted space are adequate, however, critics argue that once space runs out — there’s not much wiggle room for those left out in the cold.
Several reports indicate, however, that the Las Vegas PD actually has no indication of enforcing the law.
