In a stunning policy reversal, police surveillance drones are coming to Baltimore next year in a desperate attempt by local officials to quell rising violence. In 2019 alone, Baltimore itself has seen more than 350 homicides according to publicly available police data and the police department in itself.
Police commissioner Michael Harrison confirmed the news this week during a press conference. According to officials, the pilot program will run about 6 months and will see drones fly over the city during the hours in which violent crimes are most prevalent.
“We will be the first American city to use this technology in an attempt to solve and deter violent crime,” Harrison said at a news conference. He said he believes they could prove to be “yet another tool” to fight the violence plaguing the city.
