More people than ever before are taking control of where they die

And that in itself is the most liberating thing I’ve read in a study in a while. More Americans than ever before are planning out the end of their lives and in those plans are plans to die at home. With a growing number of hospital incidents; astronomical medical and health bills, and most things in between it makes perfect sense as to why people are dying at home.

According to the New England Journal of Medicine, home deaths have sharply risen over the past several years. Part of that growth in America can be attributed to home and hospice care, which is legally and lawfully covered by Medicare.

From 2003 to 2017, the percentage of people dying at home increased from 23.8 percent to 30.7 percent, researchers found.

This leaves me with a liberating feeling because I know when I reach old age and near the end of life — I’d like to also die at home. The thought of dying at home where I’ve been comfortable my entire life sounds like a great way to leave this world.
