Mexican hospital holds couple hostage over unpaid bill, Tyler Perry gets to the rescue

We’ve all heard it so many times in odd countries or on vacation times with loved ones — how that vacation can swiftly turn into a living nightmare. For one Georgia couple, uh, their Cancunian vacation turned into not only a nightmare it also turned into a story of just how broken healthcare is around the world.

ABC/Good Morning America

According to Sandra Rose, Stephen Johnson and Tori Austin (a lovely couple) were vacationing together on a Carribean cruise when Johnson suddenly fell ill. This perhaps is where the story took a turn for the ungodly worse, and then, the worst did happen.

Cruise ship captains pretty much recommended and ordered him off the boat and into a stationary hospital on land. There, he reportedly discovered that he had a number of illnesses including diabetes. But that isn’t the worst of the couple ‘s then plight.

Instead of realizing that the couple had actually been from overseas.. hospital officials racked a $14,000 medical bill due to the unintended illnesses. Alike say healthcare in America, Mexican officials were unwilling to even let the couple leave the hospital until the bill was paid in full (they were not told beforehand how to get proper insurance that would cover such a thing on the cruise ship!).

Thankfully, according to Channel 2 Action News, Tyler Perry stepped in after seeing a Good Morning America segment on the couple. Perry immediately offered to pay the bill in full so the couple could leave, whom, is now on their way back to Sandy Springs GA.
