Sometimes in the music industry, bright ideas exist, and then some ideas just don’t quite fall into that category. For Frank Ocean, that remains under determination. On Thursday the hitmaker announced his uber-secretive Prep club party, whereas, literally nobody was invited except for those that Frank knew personally (and a few lucky others).
The event per Ocean’s own description was meant to bring awareness to what life was like before the existence of the now much-talked-about Prep drug (pre-exposure prophalaxyis). That pill for those that don’t know is meant to prevent HIV.
This is where it backfired for Ocean. Hours after the party/show concluded, Ocean ‘s website launched the now hotly-mocked Prep shirts that cost a whopping $60. Many quickly pounced on the sale of shirts citing that it was eerily similar to the high mark-ups of the actual drug that pharma companies take part in.
Coulda also been thoughtful if all the funds went to service providers, PrEP navigators, and HIV justice and treatment orgs, but who asked us?
