Huge developments today in Brazil as a government official has turned against the Bolsinaro administration. In a telling interview with the BBC, the unnamed official confirmed that the administration has been quietly destroying the Amazon at unbelievable rates since Jose’s elections.
For those that aren’t environmental geeks, uh, this is dangerous. The potential for global impact remains high mostly due to the fact that the Amazon sucks carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. The potential for deadly destruction is high.
During the interview (which is available in full) the official revealed that about 2.5acres of the Amazon are destroyed every minute. In fact, the government turns a blind eye to it. Allegedly Bolsinaro favors development and money over reclaiming and saving the environment, something, that at this rate could lead to dangerously hot temperatures in the near future.
Brazil is home to at least 60% of the Amazon basin.
