Forever 21 caught in brouhaha over alleged fat-shaming: Reports

Fast-Fashion retailer Forever 21, indeed, has found itself in the midst of a brouhaha after online customers discovered apparent weight-loss bars in their arriving packages this week. News reports and several social media reports claim that packages arrived specifically from the plus size department of the store, uh, loaded with Atkins weight-loss bars.

Social media. expectedly lit up with criticism over the claim that by sending the bars with the packages, the retailer was “knowingly” shaming women who are over a certain size. Meanwhile, the retailer in a statement released Tuesday evening, fought back by noting that “all orders*” received the diet bars in their packages — not just plus-sized orders.

“From time to time, Forever 21 surprises our customers with free test products from third parties in their e-commerce orders. The freebie items in question were included in all online orders, across all sizes and categories, for a limited time and have since been removed,” the company told BuzzFeed News.

“This was an oversight on our part and we sincerely apologize for any offense this may have caused to our customers, as this was not our intention in any way.”
