New York — Rikers Island; new day, same story, another death. This time, however, it appears that a transgender woman was found dead yesterday in her cell. The story has sent shockwaves through social media and renewed reported calls for the prison to shut down.

Layleen Cubilette-Polanco, 27, was found dead in her cell with little to no explanation as to how. Social media activists and their peers championed protests outside of the city courthouse on Monday whereas action was demanded in her name.

From what we know — Polanco was arrested in April on misdemeanour charges of assault and possession of a controlled substance (which we’re going to safely guess from personal experience in Harlem was pot).

Rest in peace Polanco, you will be missed girl.
