While You Weren’t Looking: Gay marriage is now legal in Florida

TALLAHASSEE — Good news for Floridians, in the event that there become no further complications in a quest for gay marriage in the state — gay couples across Florida will be legally allowed to wed come 6 January. A federal judge ruled on 2 January that there is ‘no reason’ to halt marriages come the end of a legal stay, and therefore, couples across the state will be allowed to wed.

Federal judge Robert Hinkle ruled in his sharply worded four page order that gay marriages can proceed on 6  January, and clerks across the state must issue licenses. This, is the expected outcome of a previous stay Hinkle put on his own ruling late last year that resulted in the original stay.

Over the holidays, The Supreme Court of the United States declined to extent Hinkle’s ruling allowing  Florida to become the 36th state in which allows same-sex marriage.
