Congress has passed sweeping legislation that could pave the way for national pot legalization

This is big news. Members of the United States Congress announced on Thursday that Congress has passed legislation that is intended to set the stage for pot legalization nationwide. Dubbed the Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act, the legislation is intended to remove criminal records; invest in communities, and fully eliminate federal penalties.

“Thousands of individuals — overwhelmingly people of color — have been subjected, by the federal government, to unjust prison sentences for marijuana offenses,” House Judiciary Committee chair Jerry Nadler said.

House Democrats are gunning in a stunning turn of events to remove cannabis and the like from the Controlled Substances database. This would effectively remove its Schedule 1 status indefinitely. House Dems say that decriminalization would apply to both prior and any future convictions.
