But there are those of us who like to escape by watching a good movie. Well no matter how you like to spend your free time, we have compiled a list of 10 movies everyone should try and see before the year is up. 1. Spotlight

Starring Mark Ruffalo, Micheal Keaton, John Slattery, Leiv Schreiber, Stanley Tucci, and Rachel Adams, Spotlight is a gripping true story about a Pulitzer Prize winning Boston Globe investigation that would shock the city to its core. This investigation would breed trouble for one of the world’s most respected newspapers. When the publications relentless team of reporters, ‘Spotlight’, dive into the accusations of abuse in the Roman Catholic Church, they unearth a cover-up that span decades. Their year long investigation reveals that this cover-up reaches the highest levels of Boston’s legal, religious, and even government agencies. 2. Brooklyn

This movie stars Jim Broadbent, Julie Walters, and Saoirse Ronan. Saoirse plays a character called Eilis Lacey, a young Irish immigrant making her way through Brooklyn during the 1950’s. Eilis leaves the familiar and comfortable home of her birth for the promises of the American dream. As she arrives on the New York City shores, an enticing romance buries her initial feelings of loneliness and homesickness. Her enchanting new romance is thrown into turmoil as her past comes to light, leading her to a difficult choice. Metacritic.com gives this film a score of 87 out of 100. Watch the trailer below.

3. Creed

 Sylvester Stallone is back in his role as Rocky in this gripping drama. Micheal B. Jordan, Tessa Thompson and Phylicia Rashad play supporting roles in this film as well. Michael B. Jordan’s character, Adonis Johnson, never got to know is famous father Apollo Creed, who passed away before Adonis’ birth. Having followed in his fathers footsteps, Adonis heads to Philadelphia, where his father fought, a then unknown, Rocky Balboa to ask him to be his trainer. Even though Rocky insists that he is out of boxing for good, he cannot help but see the same qualities of determination, heart, and strength in Adonis he saw in Apollo. Qualities that helped bitter rivals become close friends. Rocky agrees to train the young fighter while simultaneously battling a greater enemy than any opponent he ever faced. With Rocky’s help it’s not long before Adonis gets his own title shot, but does he have the fighters heart to take it? Metacritic.com gave this film a score of 82 out of 100. Check out the trailer.

4. Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs was arguably one of the most influential people to come in our modern era. It is fitting that the movie bearing his name would bring to light the sheer brilliance of the man at his epicenter. The movie is set backstage during three major product launch events, all culminating with the 1998 unveiling of the worlds first iMac. This movie goes behind the scenes of the emerging digital revolution, and gives us a very intimate look at who Steve Jobs was. The movie stars Kate Winslet, Jeff Daniels, Seth Rogen, and Michael Fassbender. Metacritic.com gives this film a score of 82 out of 100. Watch the trailer below.

5. Bridge of Spies

Tom Hanks, Alan Alda, Mark Rylance and Amy Ryan all star in this thriller by Dreamworks. Bridge of Spies is a story of a man named James Donovan, a lawyer from Brooklyn, who suddenly finds himself thrown into the middle of the Cold War. His unfortunate circumstance is brought about when the CIA sends him to complete an almost impossible task. The negotiated release of an American pilot. 6. The Big Short

The global collapse of the economy is coming and the media, government, and even the banks refuse to see or acknowledge it. When four outsiders realize what is going to happen, they hatch an ambitious plan called, The Big Short. This plan takes them into the murky underbelly of the banking industry, causing them to question everything and everyone. This movie by Paramount Pictures stars, Brad Pitt, Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale, John Magaro, Hamish Linklater, Melissa Leo, and Steve Carell. 7. Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens

Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill are both back in the seventh movie in the Star Wars saga. The movie is a continuation of the Star Wars movies. Adam Dirver, Daisy Ridley, Carrie Fisher, Domhnall Gleeson, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac, all star in this film. Metacritic.com gave this film a score of 81 out of 100. 8. The Revenant

Set in the uncharted wilderness of America, an expedition takes an unexpected turn when Leonardo DiCaprio’s character, Hugh Glass is savagely attacked by a bear. The famous explorer is left for dead by the members of his hunting party. Glass has to endure and overcome the betrayal of his friend and confidant John Fitzgerald, as well as unthinkable grief. Driven by sheer will, guts, and the love of his family, Glass has to survive a brutal winter in order to live and claim redemption. Metacritic.com gave this movie a score of 77 out of 100. 9. Straight Outta Compton

The mid 1980’s was a dangerous time on the streets of Compton California. Five young men took their real life experiences from the streets of Compton and translated it into music that rebelled against the abuse dished out by local authority. They gave a voice to a generation that was silenced. Straight Outta Compton tells the story of the iconic and legendary rap group N.W.A. It ells a compelling story of the rise and fall of the group, while showing how the N.W.A. changed and revolutionized pop and music culture. Once the truth about life in the hood was revealed to the world, a culture war erupted. 10. The Hateful Eight

Years after the Civil War, a stagecoach carrying bounty hunter John Ruth, played by Kurt Russell, and a fugitive Daisy Domergue, played by Jennifer Jason Leigh, race through Wyoming, on its way to Red Rock where Ruth, who is known as “The Hangman,” will bring Domergue to justice. While on the road the run into a couple of strangers. These strangers are Major Marquis Warren, played by Samuel L. Jackson, a black former solider turned bounty hunter, and Chris Mannix, played by Walton Goggins, a southern renegade who is supposed to be the Sheriff of the town. The four of these people seek refuge at Minnie’s Haberdashery from the snow storm. While the owner of the establishment is visiting her mother, the four meet four other strangers while staying at the Haberdashery. With the storm getting progressively worse, they soon realize that making it to Red Rock may be the least of their problems. Metacritic.com gave this film a score of 69 out of 100.
