US asking for more time to give kids back to immigrant parents

Bad news for those hoping to see  children reunited with their parents weeks after being torn from  their own families. According to  documents filed with the Justice Department,  the Trump Admin, has asked for more time in the problem that they themselves created.  This week, indeed, marked the formal deadline that children taken from their immigrant parents at the border (and beyond) must be returned to their families or else.

Last week, a federal judge ruled that all children under the age of 5 must be reunited with their families and all others no later than 25 July.  The Trump Admin cited in documents that “DNA testing sometimes inconclusive is holding up this process”. A process, uh, that nobody is quite sure why they’re even using.

“The Government does not wish to unnecessarily delay reunifications or burden class members,” the Justice Department filing reads. “At the same time, however, the Government has a strong interest in ensuring that any release of a child from Government custody occurs in a manner that ensures the safety of that child.”
