USCIS: America no longer a nation of immigrants

Thanks in part to Donald Trump of course.  The U.S Customs and Immigration Department is apparently undergoing sweeping changes to its own mission statement(s) and activities.  Per a memo sent out this week, officials told staff that  in the coming days “a nation of immigrants” will be indefinitely removed from the statement all together.

Considering the agency is actually called U.S Immigration, ehum, we’re not quite sure how that’s going to work out.  The news comes amid renewed calls for better immigration, and of course, Trump ‘s own calls for “the wall”.

“U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services administers the nation’s lawful immigration system, safeguarding its integrity and promise by efficiently and fairly adjudicating requests for immigration benefits while protecting Americans, securing the homeland, and honoring our values.”

Here is USCIS’s previous mission statement:

“USCIS secures America’s promise as a nation of immigrants by providing accurate and useful information to our customers, granting immigration and citizenship benefits, promoting an awareness and understanding of citizenship, and ensuring the integrity of our immigration system.”

The changes clearly stick out, and, have drawn some pretty interesting reactions on social media.
