An in depth look into life as an inmate in Florida’s correctional system

Operation Push begins today throughout the state in hopes that the Governor will finally give prisoners human-ready conditions and a fair wage for the work that they do.

The Guardian is out with an interesting story on Martin Luther King Jr’s birthday.  Per the newspaper,  Florida officials are in hot water this week after prisoners from at least 8 prisons are planning to protests the “horrifying conditions” that they’re subjected to, and, often in an unfair manner.

The Intercept rounded up some of the numbers in the situation.  Prisoners across Florida rounded up upwards of 3.35m hours of work over the past year or so.  In that year, their total number of hours of work would be equal to one receiving a payment of about $38m.  That figure and the number of hours, ehum, reportedly includes Hurricane Irma cleanup.

So, ehum, what’s the point of Operation Push?   Advocates say that  Florida officials are “unfairly” turning their prisoners into slaves.    When contacted by The Daily News,   Governor Rick Scott’s office declined to comment.
