Major health insurer outs thousands of HIV positive men in America

If you happen to be HIV positive in America and those around you don’t know, uh, it might be a good idea to check the mail before anybody else does.  A major insurer, Aetna, is in hot-water after they exposed thousands of people and their most personal secret.

According to the LGBT rights groups, Aetna is hot-water this weekend after thousands of people across the US (particularly gay men and women)  were targeted by Aetna’s horrible failure with their mailers.   The health insurer sent out mailers about those taking HIV medications (like PReP), or simply are HIV positive themselves along with health information.

So, what’s the issue? First, uh, something of  such a nature was actually sent in the US mail. Second, the insurer forgot to check their envelopes and secure them so paperwork wouldn’t “slide” potentially disclosing information through the window of the envelope.

Officials say the inevitable happened.  LGBTQ NATION reports that one particular man has now lost his home after his mail was picked up by someone else in his house, who, later removed him from the home after discovering he was HIV positive.  The window of the envelope wasn’t secured, and, just briefly his associates were able to read that Aetna had disclosed his status on the front page of the mailer.

Legal action is expected against Aetna, and, as of this writing some 23 complaints have been filed.
